New ScanSafe report finds more malware was blocked in July than during the whole of 2007

Last month saw more web-based malware blocked than the whole of 2007, an increase of a third, according to security as a service vendor ScanSafe.

The firm's latest Global Threat Report for July found an increase of 87 per cent in web-based malware blocks from June to July, mainly caused by the increasing use of SQL injection attacks.

July also saw a surge in social engineering-based email attacks, where users are tricked into installing backdoor Trojans and other malware on their PCs. According to ScanSafe, 95 per cent of its customers tried to click on links to malicious sites in these emails.

“This is a pretty disturbingly high percentage; it doesn't speak to anything adverse on the customers' part though, but more the high level of social engineering on the part of the attackers," said ScanSafe's Mary Landesman. "A lot of the emails we saw were masquerading as news alerts from reputable sources such as Google and CNN."

Landesman advised that alongside implementing web filtering technology, IT departments should take on an educational role to "bring the user up to a higher level of understanding" about the nature of current threats.

The ScanSafe Global Threat Report is based on analysis of more than 10 billion web requests scanned each month on behalf of businesses in more than 60 countries, the firm said.

LG Electronics will launch in October a netbook-class laptop PC based on Intel's Atom processor that also includes 3G wireless, it said Wednesday at the IFA show in Berlin.

The X110 will include an HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) cellular data modem that should be compatible with the newer 3G networks now being rolled out by most major carriers around the world. HSPA is typically capable of download speeds of several megabits per second, and the latest versions of the evolving technology also offer megabit-per-second uploads.

In addition to 3G, the machine supports 802.11b/g wireless LAN and has a wired Ethernet connector.

The X110 is based on the same 1.6GHz Atom processor that many of its competing devices use and has a 10-inch WSVGA resolution (1,024 by 600 pixels) screen that, if it wasn't for the 3G, would place it very close to competing netbook PCs.

It runs the Windows XP Home operating system.

The machine will be available in several colors, including white, pink, or silver. LG didn't announce the price.

Initially, the Blue Cloud technology must be deployed internally at each organization, essentially as the foundation for an "internal" cloud. The Blue Cloud platform, running on IBM BladeCenters with Power and x86 processors and Tivoli service management software, dynamically provisions and allocates resources as workloads fluctuate for an application. Blue Cloud is being billed as a more distributed computing architecture than typically found in most enterprise datacenters. It is based on Hadoop. Over time, IBM expects to offer Blue Cloud resources on demand, in the provisioned style of Amazon.com and AT&T.

IBM also provides hosting services for SaaS providers, including SAP and SucecssFactors.

Sun Microsystems: An on-demand grid, and perhaps more
With its "the network is the computer" mantra, Sun provided much of the inspiration for the cloud computing movement. And its Sun Grid Engine was one of the first on-demand cloud offerings, providing access to compute and storage resources optimized for parallel-processing applications.

The company also has a research venture dubbed "Project Caroline" meant to provide a configurable pool of virtualized compute, storage, and networking resources to small and medium-size SaaS providers, so they don't need to develop their own infrastructure. There have been recent reports that Sun is planning to turn Project Caroline into a full-blown business, but there's been no official word from they company yet.

Terremark Worldwide: Resource pool for on-demand servers
The Terremark Enterprise Cloud is designed to give datacenters an Internet-optimized computing infrastructure. Enterprise Cloud clients buy a dedicated resource pool of processing, memory, storage, and networking, from which they can deploy servers on demand. A Web portal allows server to be dynamically provisioned from a pre-allocated pool of dedicated computer resources. Terremark promises that its cloud servers behave exactly like their physical counterparts, allowing applications to be run without modification.

XCalibreCommunications: Self-provisioned virtual servers
Described by some observers as Europe's answer to Amazon's EC2, Scotland-based XCalibre's FlexiScale provides self-provisioning of virtual dedicated servers via a control panel or API. Persistent storage is based on a fully virtualized high-end SAN/NAS back end.

Amazon.com: As-you-need-them basic IT resources
Amazon was an early cloud computing proponent, and the company now has one of the market's longest menu of services. Amazon's core cloud offering, the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), provides a virtualized cloud infrastructure that's designed to provide scalable compute, storage, and communication facilities.

Amazon's cloud computing arsenal also includes the Simple Storage Service (S3), a persistent storage system, as well as the Simple Database (SimpleDB), which provides a remotely accessible database, and the Simple Queuing Service (SQS), a message queue service that's also an agent for tying together distributed applications created by the EC2, S3, and SimpleDB combo.

AT&T: Scalable hosting in a managed network
AT&T Synaptic Hosting aims to give datacenters the ability to manage applications, compute resources on servers, and stored data elastically, so they can scale up or down as needed. The hosted platform provides dynamic security and storage capabilities as well as a Web portal to manage capacity, conduct maintenance, and monitor network service and performance.

AT&T has long offered hosting services, but not ones that could scale up or down as needed. AT&T's resources and services run within its own network, rather than across datacenters linked via the public Internet, which the company claims provides more certainty over server levels.

Google: Resources for small businesses and developers
Google already offers several cloud-based services, such as e-mail and storage, for consumers, a well as the AppEngine development and provisioning platform for individual developers. The company's logical next step, given its vast infrastructure resources, would be a move into the enterprise cloud market.

"There's not that much difference between the enterprise cloud and the consumer cloud," Google CEO Eric Schmidt said last May during an appearance in Los Angeles with IBM chief Sam Palmisano, as the companies announced a joint cloud computing initiative. Over the next year or so, Google and IBM plan to roll out a worldwide network of servers for a cloud computing infrastructure. The IBM-Google cloud runs on Linux-based machines using Xen virtualization and Apache Hadoop, an open source implementation of the Google File System. Provisioning is automatic, courtesy of IBM's Tivoli Provisioning Manager.

IBM: A platform for your "internal" cloud

More and more tech companies promise cloud offerings. But they're not all the same. InfoWorld's guide to what the key companies offer

The news that AT&T has joined the rapidly growing ranks of cloud computing providers reinforces the argument that the latest IT outsourcing model is well on its way to becoming a classic disruptive technology.

By enabling datacenter operators to "publish" computing resources -- such as servers, storage, and network connectivity -- cloud computing provides a pay-by-consumption scalable service that's usually free of long-term contracts and is typically application- and OS-independent. The approach also eliminates the need to install any on-site hardware or software.

Currently dominated by Amazon.com and several small startups, cloud computing is increasingly attracting the interest of industry giants, including Google, IBM, and now AT&T. "Everyone and their dog will be in cloud computing next year," predicts Rebecca Wettemann, vice president of research at Nucleus Research, a technology research firm.

Yet James Staten, an infrastructure and operations analyst at Forrester Research, warns that prospective adopters need to tread carefully in a market that he describes as both immature and evolving. Staten notes that service offerings and service levels vary widely between cloud vendors. "Shop around," he advises. "We're already seeing big differences in cloud offerings."

To help cut through the confusion, here's a rundown some major cloud providers -- both current and planned -- all offering resources that go beyond basic services such as SaaS (software as a service) applications and Web hosting:

3Tera: appliance-driven virtual servers
3Tera's AppLogic is a grid engine that has evolved over time into a full-fledged cloud computing environment. The company says its offering is designed to enable datacenters to replace expensive and hard-to-integrate IT infrastructure -- such as firewalls, load balancers, servers, and SANs -- with virtual appliances. Each appliance runs in its own virtual environment.

AppLogic combines servers into a scalable grid that's managed as a single system via a browser or secure shell. According to 3Tera, datacenters can add or remove servers on the fly, monitor hardware, manage user credentials, reboot servers, install software, build virtual appliances, back up the system, repair damaged storage volumes, inspect logs, and perform every other management tasks from a single point of control, all while the system is running.

Microsoft Makes Online Security More Secure

At the Black Hat USA 2008 conference, Microsoft Corp introduced security-related programs that share early information with partners to help them protect customers quickly and effectively. The new programs also provide additional information and guidance to help customers evaluate risks and prioritize the deployment of Microsoft security updates.

"The introduction of these new programs helps address evolving online threats and provides more practical guidance to assess and manage risk," said Andrew Cushman, director of security response and outreach at Microsoft. "In the race between exploit and protection, Microsoft is committed to shifting the advantage to the security industry. The Microsoft Active Protections Program gives security software providers the information and resources they need to help better protect customers."

Along with the predictability of Microsoft’s monthly security update process is the emergence of an undesirable cycle — the release of exploit code, related to those updates, sometimes within hours of release. Understanding this changing threat environment, Microsoft will offer the Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP), which gives security software providers advance information about vulnerabilities addressed by Microsoft security updates. This will allow security software providers to offer protections to customers quickly and effectively.

"As security threats become more sophisticated, the global security community must combine its resources and work together to provide maximum security protections to worldwide Internet users," said George Stathakopoulos, general manager of security engineering and communications at Microsoft. "No one organization can counter online attacks alone. Therefore, we must use the combined strength of the industry, partners, customers and public organizations to build a more secure environment for everyone."

In addition, as part of the company’s ongoing effort to improve its guidance for customers, Microsoft announced its new Exploitability Index. Developed based on customer feedback, the Exploitability Index will provide customers with guidance on the likelihood of functional exploits being developed for vulnerabilities addressed by Microsoft security updates. This additional information helps customers better assess their unique risks and better prioritize deployment of the monthly security update. The Exploitability Index will be included as part of Microsoft’s monthly security bulletin release.

Broadcom to buy AMD's digital TV business

Broadcom is paying $192.8 million in cash to acquire Advanced Micro Devices' digital television business, the companies said Monday.AMD's DTV assets include Xilleon integrated DTV processors and reference designs, NXT receiver ICs, the Theater 300 DTV processor, and a line of panel processors that perform advanced motion compensation, frame rate conversion and scaling.

AMD had announced last month that it was quitting the DTV market, as part of an effort to streamline its businesses. CEO Dirk Meyer said in a press release that the sale was a "key step" toward helping the company boost its financial performance.

Roughly 530 AMD employees working for the DTV business will be "invited to join Broadcom" as part of the sale, which has been approved by both companies' boards of directors.

The introduction of PDF from Adobe revolutionized the portability of information and methods for publishing volume information on the web. But despite the advantages of portability, PDF remains a fairly cumbersome means of presenting information, particularly when a large quantity of reference documentation is concerned.

Acrobat now faces its first major challenge in the form of FlashPaper 2 from Macromedia. FP2 allows you to generate either Flash documents or PDFs for viewing on a local machine or distribution over the web.

Flash documents are not dependent on any platform, browser or device, but the real beauty is in the user interface. This is slick and intuitive, with toolbar buttons for zooming, panning, printing or selecting text, as well as excellent navigational control and text search. Critically, Flash documents comply with the Section 508 U.S. requirement for accessibility, so your published documents will probably comply with your legal responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act right off the bat.

Particular support for the partially sighted is provided through the interface's real-time zoom slider control. This really is a treat to use (click here to see a Flash document of a previous ITnews review). But Flash developers can also manipulate the Flash document interface to incorporate additional functionality, while designers can customize the user interface to match the look-and-feel of an existing website.

Flash documents are very quick loading in the browser and in our tests we were generating files as much as half the size of PDF.

Generating Flash documents is easy. FlashPaper installs as a series of printer drivers, meaning that any document that can be printed can also be converted into a Flash document simply by selecting FP2 from the list of printers. FP2 also supports drag-and-drop, or you can also create Flash documents by right-clicking any printable document in Windows Explorer. FP2 also installs toolbars in Microsoft Office applications for quick access.

All hyperlinks in documents are preserved in the generation process and you can even retain the outline structure in Word files. Of course, FP2 also allows you to generate PDFs, and nice features include the ability to create and email a PDF in one click, of to protect the document with 128-bit encryption and two levels of password protection. I would have liked to have seen these same features support the Flash document format as well as PDF.
Verdict

PDF is not dead, of course. Adobe Acrobat continues to provide a comprehensive environment for creating and manipulating portable documents (we are publishing a review on the new version of Acrobat Professional soon). But in terms of sheer usability, Flash documents have the edge. They are a refreshing delight to view and with FP2 very easy to create.

Unlike PDF, Flash documents mean that volume information no longer looks like an afterthought. There is little doubt in my mind that Flash documents will continue to gain in popularity and seriously threaten PDF. Wed designers will love it, of course, because the interface can be stitched in with existing content. But, currently, FP2 is only available on Windows platforms, and not on the Mac.

Once generated, Flash documents cannot be edited. So unless you really need the post-production offered by Adobe Acrobat, then FlashPaper 2 is your answer to deploying printable output on the web. Brilliant.

A USB device is any peripheral hardware that connects and runs on a computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface - a standardized socket that allows connection and disconnection of devices without having to reboot the computer. USB controls the peripheral devices in a master/slave relationship.

The USB interface expands a computer's plug and play capabilities, as it allows a wide array of devices that have been specifically created for USB to be connected with the PC, either with or without device drivers installed. USB's standard design was accomplished by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), a consortium of leading computer and electronic companies that serves as the industry standards body. As a result of the standardization, third-party hardware is identical on all platforms and differs only in the required OS-specific software.

The advantages from USB aside from expandability are lower production cost, auto-configuration, improved performance and reliable speed. The USB interface also provides power to peripherals without the need for a power adapter. Common USB devices include mice, keyboards, joysticks, webcams, game pads and other low-bandwidth devices.

USB controllers

Before USB 2.0, there are two competing Host Control Device implementations: the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) developed by Microsoft, Compaq and National Semiconductor, and the Universal Host Controller Interface (UHCI) made by Intel. The USB-IF mandated a unified implementation in USB Version 2.0, resulting in the Enhance Host Controller Interface (EHCI). Only EHCI supports hi-speed transfers of up to 480 Mbit/second, while the original competing implementations were retained as companion or virtual host controllers for backward compatibility. The virtual host controllers support full speed (12 Mbit/second) and low-speed (1.5 Mbit/second) transfers.

Transparency key recommendation in new privacy guidelines

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has issued a practical guide to businesses and government agencies showing them how best to respond in the event of a personal information security breach.The guide comes weeks after the the Australian Law Reform Commission issued its report, For Your Information:
Australian Privacy Law and Practice, which recommends a re-write of the nation's 20-year-old privacy laws, including the recommendation that mandatory breach notification be introduced into law.

Presently, there is no specific requirement in the Privacy Act to notify individuals when and if a breach has occurred. However, the guide, released by the Australian Privacy Commissioner, Karen Curtis, believes notification can “operate as an important mitigation strategy” for individuals and also help promote transparency and trust about the organisation or agency.

This is a point that has already been touched on by Gartner security analyst Andrew Walls who has said security will now become a market differentiator for companies/organisations that handle personal info, where people choose the one with the best, most transparent security track record.

"The reality is there probably wont be any more [data breach] activity than normal, we're just going to hear and talk about every one now, which is a healthy thing because it provides transparency and establishes security performance as a market differentiator. But it will be painful for a few years," said Walls.

In the case where there is a real risk of serious harm as a result of a personal information security breach, the guide recommends that the affected individuals be notified.

Such was the case with Ticketek which issued an apology to some of its members after human error exposed over 13,000 email addresses in a botched newsletter mailout a fortnight ago.

However, not all notifications are equal. “While notification is an important mitigation strategy, it will not always be the appropriate response to a breach. Providing notification about low risk breaches can cause undue anxiety and de-sensitise individuals to notice.”

The guide outlines four key steps for organisations to consider when responding to a breach or suspected breach. The first step is to contain the breach and do a preliminary assessment. “Once an agency and organisation has discovered or suspects that a personal information security breach has occurred, they should take immediate common sense steps to limit the breach.”

Step two is to evaluate the risks associated with the breach. Factors worth considering when accessing the breach include identifying what personal information is involved; what is the context of the information; and assessing what is the risk of harm that could result to individuals.

The third step is to consider notification.

“Notification can be an important mitigation strategy that has the potential to benefit both the agency or organisation and the individuals affected by a personal information security breach. The challenge is to determine when notification is appropriate. While notification is an important mitigation strategy, it will not always be the appropriate response to a breach. Providing notification about low risk breaches can cause undue anxiety and de-sensitise individuals to notice. Each incident needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis to determine whether breach notification is required.”

The final step is to prevent future breaches. Key to this is a prevention plan which may include a security audit of both physical and technical security or a review of policies and procedures.

Telstra shakes up mobile broadband pricing

Telstra’s BigPond business unit has cut the price of its mobile broadband services and now charges the same rate for wireless mobile card plans as it does for wireless modem plans.There is a new 10GB plan and a reduced number of wireless broadband plans in an effort to make it “simpler for customers”, according to Telstra.

The new mobile broadband plans are:

- 400MB for $39.95
- 1GB for $59.95
- 3GB for $89.95
- 10GB for $129.95

BigPond has a choice of wireless broadband devices which include either a 7.2Mbps express card or USB mobile card or the new BigPond 7.2 Home Network Gateway modem with built-in Wi-Fi.

Bigpond’s Super G Fast 7.2 mobile card allows 550Kbps to 3.0Mbps download and up to 1.3Mbps upload speeds. The standard mobile card and built-in devices operates at 550Kbps to 3.0Mbps down and 384Kbps up.

BigPond group managing director Justin Milne said the new wireless broadband plans reflect the “exceptional value” the company offers customers who are looking for a reliable wireless broadband service.

"New customers with multiple Telstra services can receive a discount of 12 months half price off their wireless broadband access,” Milne said. “We have also removed the different speed plans which may have confused some customers, so all of our wireless broadband plans are now available with the fastest network speeds available.”

The additional usage charge has been “simplified” to $0.25 per MB across all plans which are effective from Sunday, August 24 and existing customers can change to the new pricing at bigpond.com.
